Well, I just rolled out of bed… okay, that’s a lie. I’m still in bed summoning the will to get myself up to go to the Whitehorse pride parade with Queer Yukon Society. But, I know that one day, this blog will go live… including all the posts that I made while this blog was living on my computer. So, I wanted to answer a question… why?

So, my immediate thought was this scene from The Office where Creed talks about his blog.
I’ll admit that my blog is a bit more sophisticated. For starters, it’s not a Word doc. I’m running it with Local, so it’s a legitimate WordPress installation that just happens to live on my MacBook. But the question is… why do this at all if it’s not live?

The reason that I’m writing in spite of the fact that the blog isn’t live now is rather simple: it WILL be live at some point. Right now, I’m thinking about actively keeping a blogging habit in addition to drafting my first novel. However, to get the best pricing at my web host I’m choosing to host the blog with, I need to fork over $630 to pay for five years of web hosting so I can get every month of those five years at $9.95 per month.
The only problem with that? I got laid off yesterday. So, needless to say, spending $630 on five years of web hosting isn’t something I’m in the market for right now and I’m not about to use a free webhost because you get what you pay for.
If a writer writes on a locally hosted blog, is it still kvetching?
Short answer, yes.
My point with this is to start just writing. It doesn’t matter if anyone sees it immediately. It doesn’t matter if it, quite frankly, sucks. But what does matter is starting to put words on paper (or screen). I’m writing a novel that only one other person has seen, so it’s not that crazy to start a whole ass author’s blog that no one can see yet.
That being said, I actually do intend to do a soft launch on Flywheel to at least get it live before I start querying agents. I mean, if Creed’s blog eventually went live, why shouldn’t mine?
