The Fucking Blog Is Live

So, I decided to finally bite the bullet and make my blog live today. I’ll share with you how I was able to create a blog for dirt cheap, and how, even though you shouldn’t, you can too. Thankfully, the software that powers this blog (WordPress) is free and my web host is dirt cheap. But the point is, the fucking blog is live. And now, it no longer just lives on my hard drive, so that’s one step closer to migrating my computer from Mac to Linux.

Step One: Set up an account with NearlyFreeSpeech.net

My current web host is NearlyFreeSpeech.net and if you sign up, you’ll get US$0.02 to allow you to test drive their services for a bit. And thankfully, I had a few bucks in PayPal that I couldn’t use for anything else, so I threw US$5.00 onto my account, which should keep the site online for roughly a couple months.

Step Two: Follow the WordPress installation guide

Oh, you think you’re done and you can just use cPanel to install WordPress? Oh, you sweet summer child. You’re on NearlyFreeSpeech.net now, which means you’ll need to make sure you’re setting your space up for success. There’s a long, convoluted guide on how to set up WordPress on NearlyFreeSpeech.net.

Step Three: Plan on finding a better web host.

Look, no shade on NearlyFreeSpeech.net, but as someone living in Canada and posting with a .ca domain name, I’d rather be on a Canadian web host. So, I’m hoping to find a web host in a country that is more likely to protect my freedom of speech.
